Welcome to Smart Tradesmen. The show dedicated to bringing Entrepreneurship into small business. Whether you are a seasoned business owner or just starting out, it is our mission to help you design a business that works for you… and not the other way around. Now, here’s your host Daniel Eric Bowling.
Hello. Welcome to today’s episode of the Smart Tradesman podcast. I am your host Daniel Eric Bowling and I am very excited to be here. Today I’m going to talk to you about educating yourself to ensure that you have a better tomorrow.
Are you an apprentice just starting out? Or, have you been in the trade for many years and now are considering going out on your own rather than working for somebody else?
Are you somebody that has been running business for years but you feel that it’s going nowhere and you have just plat toed working for a pay check and owning your own job? I have been there at every stage of this. And what changed my world was when I started listening to the Podcast and reading books and listening to audio books. I just started getting very hungry for knowledge and realizing that there are people out there making big decisions every day and making changes and making the world what they want rather than just trying to finish that next project, the next thing that comes through the door and then hopefully you get home in time to eat dinner and then you come back to it the next day.
You are creative like me. We’re are creative and we like to figure things out, we are not necessary good at the business side of things, so any free time that we have is going to be sucked into trying to figure that out. But we are creatives at heart; we have a thirst for knowledge so you need to feed that side of you. You need to start by asking questions into finding what it is you’re wanting out of life and who your customer is and what exactly are you trying to accomplish. I have actually created a jump start guide or kind of like a business plan to ask the questions to get you thinking and get you moving in the right direction. You can find that free worksheet over at smarttradesmen.com/bizplan. Jump over there, grab the free worksheet download and just start going through all these questions that you need to be asking yourself.
So moving on, what do I mean by educate yourself? I’m not necessarily saying you have to go to school or anything. Although, I’m realizing for myself that I would like to one day go back and just take some classes just because, I don’t believe that I’m going to work for somebody in the foreseeable future. So, I’m not trying to build a resume per se, but for my own personal needs I love to learn. So, it may not be the actual degree I’m after as an ingle but I definitely think that I want to at least sit in on some classes and see if it’s something that I can do and want to actually invest in for myself. Who knows, maybe I will be a history major and I will learn all about the history behind the furniture that I am working on or something. It might sounds silly but believe it or not those things really interest me as I start reading in to them so who knows where it will go. If you are like me you listen to lots of audio while you work and it’s mostly music. Well, let me tell you, 50, 60, 70 hours sometimes of music a week, get old.
For having millions of songs out there, it doesn’t matter if I’m listening to the radio or my own playlist Pandora, spotify, each one starts playing the same songs over and over again, so it feels like. So, then I have listen to every genre known to man, I even listen to salsa music and classical music just because I got tired of listening to the same words in the songs over and over again. And then I had a friend turn me on to Podcast, so I’m like, “What is a Podcast?” He tried to explain and I understand why it’s difficult to explain it because I still can’t explain it and I have one. Let me just tell you, it did not take me long before I was hooked. I think I have started off with a couple of comedy Podcast that he recommended and then I went into some business type podcast because I realized that after listening to a little bit, I just wondered what else is out there. I think I had a question about business and I just searched it and popped up a podcast all about that topic. And oh wow, I listened to all of those and then there was some gust on that show that were also podcasters. So, then I looked up their podcast and then from there it was just never ending. I was going through every podcast that I could find and it didn’t take me long to realized that I think that I wanted to have my own podcast. Seem kind of crazy at first but here I am.
I went from listening to lots of music, so much so that I was bored with it. I then turned it off just to listen to the silence instead and then the voices in my head would take over and I was running million miles in my head and had to take a break from myself so then the music would be back on or I would just get totally distracted and next thing you know I would be leaving work because I just couldn’t handle it anymore. And then podcast came along, but I will tell you, if you get addicted you may run out of the episodes of the podcast that you like to listen to and you find yourself waiting for new ones to come out every week. Well, to fill that void, I started listening to audio books and there are some amazing books out there that will really change your mindset and get you thinking about your business in ways that you would never have dreamed of.
If you’re showing up to work every day and is the same as yesterday, which was the same as the day before, then let me tell you that you need to be taking in the advice from these great mentors out there and you don’t have to pay the price of a mentorship. You just go buy a book or download the audio-book app. In fact, if you go to my resources page you can get a free month credit on audiobooks.com and check out a free book and see if it’s even your cup of tea. Download a free audio-book, it’s yours to keep on your phone, and listen to it whenever you want. I go back and listen to the same books because they were so powerful that after few months of not hearing them, that I need to relearn the messages that was in there. I honestly because I go back and listen to the books, I only download the one a month that I get with my membership. If you become audio-book crazy, you can buy more credits on top of the free credit you get every month with the membership. Well, I shouldn’t say free, you’re paying for your membership they give you one credit a month but then you can buy more beyond that and it’s totally worth it. I think it’s ten to fifteen dollars a month and it’s yours to just listen to and make the time go by.
I got to tell you that my eight hour drives back and forth distances between audio-books and podcasts are almost fun to do. The eight-hour drive goes by so quick and if I’m in the middle of a podcast and I’m just a few minutes away from finishing, I might sit in the driveway or drive around the block just to finish it. And, I know that sounds crazy but it’s just something that I’m very passionate about now and that is learning and educating myself and really making me feel like I’m bettering myself and opening up the doors to the future because I have no idea where I’m going to end up and I like that.
The future is wide open for me and I did not feel that way when I was working, even for myself in a business that I have co-owned I felt trapped. I did not plan that business model it just kind of happened. That’s all I’m going to leave you with for today. Make sure that you’re educating yourself and you’re actually thinking about with purpose, what are you trying to accomplish with your business. Because, if you just love what you’re doing but you have no end goal, then you should just be getting paid by somebody else to do what you’re doing. If you’re not building a future for yourself and you just owning your own job, then you should at least just be getting a paycheck without the stress. Now, if you want to start educating yourself, plan for the future and really make being a business owner beneficial to you then now’s the time to get started.
I would love to help you in any way that I can so reach out to me. As always, my email is Daniel@smarttradesman.com. Go over to smarttradesman.com/bizplan, grab the free worksheet I mentioned earlier. And definitely, if you want to check out a free audio-book, go to my resource page click on the audio book link and it’ll give you the free month and the free credit.
Thank you so much for joining me today in this episode of Smart tradesmen. Until next time, peace out.
I just realized after editing this episode that I probably should’ve listed off just a few good podcast to get you started. So I will give you a quick list of the podcast that I currently listen to or ones that I highly recommend. If you have missed any of them or you need to see a full list and probably an updated list as I go, go to smarttradesmen.com/podcastrecommendations.
One of the early podcast that I started listening to was called “Top 5 Percent Income Earners with Dean Pitino.” I don’t believe that he is making any more new episodes. He’s on to different projects, but if he still have those episodes up then check it out it will really change your perspective if you’re working for somebody currently.
The next podcast I’m going to recommend is “Hack The Entrepreneur, with my good friend John Nastor but you can call him Jonny as you’ll find out in his intro. He just dives in deep to what makes entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs and what make some real people and what makes them tick. I highly recommend checking out that to get started.
Two that I listen to early on was “Smart Passive Income with Pat Flynn and Entrepreneur On Fire with John Lee Dumas.” Smart Passive income is host by Pat Flynn who is a big name in the online industry, especially podcasting. He has an amazing journey that he will tell way better than I will so I’ll let you find out where he comes from and how he originally was an architect and what led him to where he is today.
Entrepreneur On Fire host by John Lee Dumas is a seven-day-a-week podcast, I know that’s crazy but seven days a week interviewing entrepreneurs. And there’s a huge archive of past guest, so you would be able to listen to that one every day for quite a while even if you listen to it all day long.
If you are just looking to learn about just random stuff and hear experts talking on these topics. I like to listen to a lot of MPR podcasts and I believe that includes that TED Talks and Ted Radio Hour, definitely check out both of those podcasts. If you’re looking for just something fun or comedy and you like the mysteries of the world, when I get tired a business podcast I listen to one called Mysterious Universe. I like the guys going back and forth with each other and they look up news stories that are talking about just on the French side of things and they really try to debunk a lot of, I think the mist out there as far as a lot of the mysterious news headlines. I like that they approach topics like the big foot and ghosts, paranormal activities and haunting and outer body experiences all with an open mind and an unbiased opinion. They’re not trying to shove their opinion down your throat, they really give each topic an honest look and then by the end of it, together you come up with what you believe is either a real or a faker or unexplained story.
If you like stories there are a ton of story podcasts. The Moph I believe is one, I can’t think of any more at the top of my head. Radiolab podcasts, I think it’s just called Radiolab. I really like Radiolab, I have just been going through a lot of the old archives and about run out of ones to listen to. But definitely check out Radio Lab for an entertaining topic-based, I think they have a main topic, they have three stories or so to go along with it and then they bring it back together at the end, totally recommended.
The WTF podcast of Marc Maron is just an interview show hosted by a comedian and he mostly talks to people within the entertainment field but recently he had President Barack Obama on in his garage recording studio to interview him on his podcast which is an amazing step for podcasts.
So, I think that’s a good start for you for your new podcasting adventure if you’re new to podcasts. If you’re not, and any of these still sounds interesting, then go check them out I highly recommend them all. This time I’m really out of here I will catch you on the flipside, see you.
