Welcome to the first episode of Smart Tradesmen Podcast which is the “Introduction to Smart Tradesmen”. In this episode, I talked about what Smart Tradesmen is, how I came up with this name, what is the reasoning behind the built of this community and how you can be a part of it. I trace back to how life has been for me in the trades industry and I saw the need for a community with a mindset that will support tradesmen from employment to starting their own small businesses.
Our journey into smart entrepreneurship begins now. In this series of podcasts, I will introduce you to a lot of ideas and pieces of advice in meaningful conversations.
- Why many are stuck at employment and why we need to move into entrepreneurship
- Personal and business growth are continuing topics in the podcasts
- Taking action is a talent that can be recognized early on
- How to make more and more money
- The relevance of podcasts in today’s marketing
Well, hello. Welcome to Episode Number 1 of Smart Tradesmen. I am your host, Daniel Eric Bowling, very excited to be here with you today.
My journey to your earbuds has been a 29 year long endeavor of me watching the world around me and seeing hardworking individuals, struggling to get by. I don’t have all the answers, but I know there’s a conversation worth starting.
There’s a skills gap coming and most don’t even recognize it. The average skilled worker is 50 years old. In the old days, stability was working at a job for 40 years, and then you get the gold watch and you get retirement. That’s no longer the case. Too many of us are fearing layoffs. And then, when we do lose those jobs that we have, we’re forced to realize that we’re walking away without any skill sets that we can put on a resume. Things are so systemized that we are not actually learning anything from our jobs. Twenty years of experience means one year of experience repeated twenty times.
I want to spend just a few minutes today talking about what you can expect from the Smart Tradesmen podcast. And, hopefully just to get to know you a little bit better. For having you reach out to me and connect, and let me know what you hope to see come out of all of this yourself.
We will continuously be discussing growth, both personal and in business. Cause if you are just showing up and putting in hours, you’re not preparing enough for a better future. You have no room to complain about your current situation if you’re not trying to make it better. You’d be like the guy who blames God for not letting you win the lottery because you pray to Him every night to win, but you never actually buy a ticket.
So that being said, we’re going to discuss how to help you grow in your personal life and in your business life, simultaneously. And, how we can get them to align with each other. It’s something that I am constantly struggling with. It gives and it takes of owning a business, and actually having a personal life. At this level of business, separate from what it means to be a business owner is sometimes difficult.
Another subject that I’ve been working on a lot lately is just taking action. It’s a real talent to be able to recognize what you want and what you need to do next and just doing it. No more wasting time on the in between of the “heigh and ho”, and “Should I do this, should I do that?” We’re going to focus on how do we take action and recognize the areas that we need to grow and move forward together. The saying that I love to tell myself is “Progress is better than perfection.” So, we’ll just figure out as we go.
Another topic that I’m sure that I share with many of you in all of my thoughts everyday is “how do I make more money?” Making money is a big topic that we were discussing. Whether you are a small business owner, you wanted to make extra money on the side, or you’re seeking that promotion, and you wanna know how you can better stand out within the workplace. Well, that’s all in the lines of what we were discussing here in Smart Tradesmen.
And, let’s face it. Everything becomes a job. Sometimes people around me are envious of what I do cause I work with furniture and design, and just a lot of aspects about it seems really appealing. But, everything becomes a job. You might as well at least do something that you don’t hate. Call your own shots. Build up skill sets that set you apart within the workplace. Never fear or lay off again. You can do all of these things as an employee. You can insert yourself as a vital role within the company that you work.
Notice that the title is Smart Tradesmen, plural in the end. It’s not about me. It’s not about showcasing how smart I am because as you find, I am not particularly smart in any one area, I don’t think. This is not about one man. This is the start to a conversation. Picking out a system to which we can run our small businesses or our side businesses, or just make extra money or get ahead at our current job while doing it together in figuring out how to support each other’s talents, and recognizing these talents inside of us that we need to be working on.
There is no one right answer for anybody. This is not trades versus college. It’s about recognizing the areas that you need to work on within yourself and developing your strengths and applying on in the ways that the best suit you in the life that you want to live. It’s never too late to start.
As individuals, we have built the world around us. It’s not the big companies. It’s the people within those big companies that have made should happen. So, together we have built the world. And, together we are Smart Tradesmen. It’s time that we get ahead and stop struggling in all the same way separately. There is currently help out there for small business. But truthfully, most small business support out there is not speaking our language. Small business, to find in most aspects, is like fifty (50) people or less. To me, fifty (50) people sounds like a pretty big company from where I stand. What about those who have a job but are trying to apply their talents on the side to start something and grow something that they are really passionate about. To me, that is a small business that needs the most support.
With the statistics against starting a small business, we need all the help we can get right from the start. Then, natural selection can take over. If it’s a bad business idea, it’s doomed from the start. But let’s not trip up those that truly could make a difference in this world before they even get to begin. Let’s learn from others’ mistakes, and let’s start working together.
The truth is I don’t know what opportunities will come out of this podcast. I do know that I love podcasts. And, they are only becoming more and more part of today’s society. I think it’s easier now than ever to start your own podcast and it may be harder as we go. So, my goal, when I said out, was just to learn podcasting cause I see a being very valuable tool moving forward as far as marketing goes for small business. So, I’ve been playing around the podcast for almost a year now so, I’m excited to put everything that I’ve learned together into this one podcast.
I look forward to growing a community of like-minded listeners to help me grow Smart Tradesmen into a mindset that will support the changing types of employment soon to come. At the end of July 2015, I will be attending the podcast movement in Forth Worth, Texas, which is a networking conference designed specifically for podcasting. By then, the Smart Tradesmen Podcast will be well on its way to being an established podcast representing the voice of hardworking class of leaders. And, I’ll be more than honored to represent those of you interested in learning more about podcasting or creating an online presence in future events such as these. It is a changing world and we can’t fight what is coming. Today, more than ever, it is so important to have an online presence in some way or another.
As I learn about building my own platform, I will gladly share with you anything that I learn along the way. Another hot topic these days, Entrepreneurship. Are you an entrepreneur? Entrepreneur doesn’t mean small business owner. Although, I think most people think they go hand in hand.
If you’re not careful, or if it’s not already too late, you end up owning a business that controls you. Instead of a business that works for you, you end up working for the business. You own your own job. But, that’s not Entrepreneurship. There’s so many tools out there to help you leverage your time and allow you to get to where you can have your business working for you and letting you live the life that you want to live. That’s what I want for you, and that’s what I want for all of us here at Smart Tradesmen.
So, I will discuss topics in each episode to keep you moving in the right direction and keep the conversation going. I’ll also bring in guests from time to time to discuss in further detail areas in which we might find beneficial to the success of our businesses. Want to be a guest in the podcast? Well, hell, let’s do it. I would love to have listeners as guests from time to time. I would like to hear what you are currently going through, and what you’re struggling with. And, we’ll talk about solutions and how we can get you to where you want to go. My biggest complaints about the other podcast that I’ve tried listening to in the past was that the big time guest that you hear from are talking about how they’ve already made it. This more of not only depressing me, made me feel like that they made it due to some type of luck, that they had something that I didn’t. And, there’s a reason why I’m not the one being successful, being interviewed. But that’s not what we need. We need to hear real people with real time issues, so we can discuss real results. That’s what we need.
So, raise your glasses, whatever you’re drinking. Cheers to the beginning of something special. Cheers to you. I’m so glad that we are on this path together. Currently drinking Miller Lite, in case you’re wondering.
