Hello! My name is Daniel. I am an upholsterer, podcaster, and entrepreneur.
I was raised on a farm 40 min east of Cincinnati, Ohio where I grew up doing farm work and working in the trades. I went on to learn the art of upholstery and eventually owned a couple upholstery and custom furniture design businesses.
I am surrounded by amazing friends and family, in which I am very thankful for. I choose to be defined by those that I spend the most of my time with, and not by my “job”.
My early years were spent working on the farm and helping my Dad and Uncle on construction jobs. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was developing a mindset that would set me apart later in life.
Later, I attended a vocational school, in the automotive program for the last two years of high school. Even though I did not plan to follow that path for a vocation, my understanding and love for trade based businesses and those in the trades, was growing even stronger.
My High School job was working during the summer, evenings, and weekends as a construction laborer. I even drove a dump truck for a short period, hauling dirt. Did I mention that I was 15 and didn’t have a license yet?
I went on to work at Toyota as a lube tech (oil changer), Holiday Inn setting up banquets, and then as a commercial drywall finisher.
Then came the day that I randomly started helping a small upholstery shop. I can’t say that I knew it at the time that I would stick with it. Or that I understood how many doors would be opened up because of it. I especially had no idea that I would end up mastering the trade and doing something really unique with my skill sets.
Nope… I had no idea. I just knew that it was clean work, done inside and out of the weather. I just thought, “this will do for now”
Well, that was 10 years ago. I stuck with it and I couldn’t be more proud with everything that I have learned along the way.
The skills that I learned have allowed me to experience so much including being a business owner, partnerships, managing employees, and many more valuable lessons that would look great on any resume.
However… I have no intentions of searching for a job. I have come to terms with the fact that I am an entrepreneur at heart.
As I grew a reputation for being a highly skilled upholsterer, I eventually started valuing my knowledge and experience as much as my customers did. I also started to incorporate some of the entrepreneurial practices that I was hearing about in podcasts, and reading about online.
How did this affect my business? I charged more money. Did the customers refuse to pay it? No, I actually got more work.
HHHMMMM…. My wheels began turning.
What if I took all of the tools, tricks, and tactics that are out there for “small business” and applied them to smaller trade based businesses?
What if I created a community that helped each other the same way that I am finding in all of these online business communities that I am in?
What if I created a resource for everything that one might need from the time they began learning a trade, all the way to retirement?
That is how Smart Tradesmen was born. Smart Tradesmen the podcast, resources, community…. all of it… that is my solution to helping trade based businesses as a whole.
But I can’t do it alone!! The fact that you are here reading this, means that you are who I am looking to help. Together we can make a difference. United we stand, and together we will grow.
